The FireSafe Council is looking for input from those of us who live in the high wildfire risk areas. The plan covers a variety of elements and takes many factors into consideration, including vegetation and tree types, tree mortality, fuel loading, slope, aspect, weather/climate, roads, homes, other structures and facilities at risk, water sources, distance from fire stations, and the like. Also factors such as age of construction, building materials, demographics, land use and zoning, etc.

Our input can help inform the consultants who are developing the plan by providing local knowledge, expressing our concerns and opinions about priorities, and so forth.

Background:

A new Santa Clara County county-wide CWPP is being developed that will take the existing Lexington Hills CWPP and other local CWPPs (such as Croy, Palo Alto, and San Jose East Foothills) and update and build on them. It will expand on and cover the gaps between the local CWPPs. The countywide CWPP will help establish the priorities for the FireSafe Council and others for projects to help protect against and prevent wildfires.

This project to develop a countywide CWPP is being organized by the Santa Clara County Fire Department in partnership with CAL FIRE Santa Clara Unit and the Santa Clara County FireSafe Council. It is funded by a grant from the SRA Fire Prevention Fee that many of us pay annually. SCCFD hired a professional consulting firm to develop the plan: SWCA Environmental Consultants.

Wildfire Protection meeting February 23

Join us on Tuesday, February 23, 2016, at 7:00 p.m. for a community meeting at the Redwood Estates Pavilion regarding the formation of the county-wide Community Wildfire Protection Plan (CWPP).

Right now Redwood Estates is covered under  the Lexington Hills CWPP. By joining the Santa Clara County CWPP, our community stands to be more visible as recipients of state and federal grant funding for fire protection measures. Members of the Santa Clara County Fire Department, Cal Fire, and the Santa Clara County Fire Safe Council are attempting to formalize this new county-wide CWPP. These members are requesting your ideas and input in an attempt to focus on our local concerns regarding wildfire prevention. These efforts will aid in grant writing proposals.

We hope you’ll attend this meeting and share your concerns and ideas. For more information, see the CWPP flyer.
